SOMEWHERE IT IS NIGHT

exhibition with Leon Michel, Laura Urbanski, Lindiwe Matshikiza at Galerie Ursula Walter, Dresden, September 27-October 17, 2024.

The central video documents a person sleeping during the natural change of light at sunrise. At first, the scene is barely recognisable in darkness before gradually becoming overexposed. With the shift of light in the projection, the atmosphere of the space changes slowly over time. This effect is doubled by a synchronised projection on the opposite side of the room: the video captures the reflected light, which is projected back in exact congruence onto the curtain covering the entire window facade.

All happenings loop in different durations, so that image and sound fall together ever differently. At irregular intervals, a ceiling fan begins to rotate for a few seconds after a subtle clicking noise, then slows down until motionless. A spoken text by Laura Urbanski fills the space in the form of a four-channel sound installation. All works were created specifically for the exhibition, which was conceived collaboratively alongside the two video works.
