BRIGHT TOMORRWOS, AMPLIFIED INSIDES, 2021
installation for a solo show at the gimp, 17.-31.12.2021, Berlin
The installation turns the exhibition space into an intimate Inside, an anywhere, pointing towards the impossibility of locating oneself. The exhibition space becomes questioned through balancing between the unlocateablity of the white cube and the concrete address of a usual room.
Only slightly audible, a sound installation, is demanding a heightened focus necessary to perceive the silences, which were recorded in different rooms and cities. An artificial window is placed on the wall, which is covering the window that was hidden, when the room was turned into a space suitable for exhibitions.
The illusion of the sun shining inside, dips the room into an atmosphere of momentariness, while the outside stays indefinite, as the view is covered by a curtain. On the floor, a carpet and pillow resemble the illuminated area and thereby suggest how the room would cast its own shadow – if the sun were to shine into the exhibition space. Implying a sense of mundanity, sun light casting shadows can also be used as means of orientation -– in the sense of cardinal directions, but also in the sense of a sundial. Two moments of light are captured as the connection between inside and outside by a source of light shining through the thin layer of glass, be it the windowpane or the phone screen -– both separate the here and there.
