(A MOVIE) OUTSIDE THE WINDOW, 2021

installation of two chairs, script, 2-channel audio to be listened with headphones, 12:09 min as an intervention at Brühlsche Terrasse, HfbK Dresden for ‘The Sixths Sense’, exhibition by Class Susan Philipsz 24.-25.7.2021

Through offering a certain viewpoint and proposing an experience through a ‘soundtrack’, the site-specific intervention aims to enable a more conscious manner of perceiving the place itself. Field recordings of the hallway opposed to the courtyard, each combined with two parallel narratives, are composed into the soundtrack of a movie, which is lacking the visual projection. Triggered by the heard scene, onlookers are projecting their own imagination into the place you see through the window - the courtyard of the HfbK Dresden.

Drawing inspiration from the ‘Poetics of Space’ by Gaston Bachelard, the work is opposing two perspectives on the same place: the actress’ perspective from within the movie/courtyard and the one of the director, sitting in the hallway, both questioning notions of inside and outside. Framed by the window analog to a projection screen, the courtyard - as neither inside nor outside - becomes the actual subject of the work, while understanding the ‘Sixths Sense’ as an inner sense: the power of imagination.
